The human in the leader seat

It helps so much to say the real stuff out loud.
To name what’s hard.
To let someone witness it with you.

One client admitted:

“I’m so upset by others’ statements and reactions that I can’t even think straight.”

Another told me:

“I want to reach out to new people, but I feel too exposed. Too raw.”

We talked it through.
And they found ways forward that actually felt good.

If you’re leading right now, please:
Let yourself have your own experience.
Reach out. Say the thing.

You don’t have to carry it all alone.

Practice: Use a Lifeline

Remember that old game show where, when you didn’t know the answer, you could use a lifeline?

Try that now, when you feel like it’s hard just to be human in your leadership seat.  Here are your choices:

Phone a Friend:  Call someone you trust and ask for support. Give them three simple rules:

  1. They must really listen.

  2. They can only ask questions (no advice, no "have you tried...").

  3. They have to assume you know what’s best for you

Ask the audience:  Lean on your stakeholders, your team, your supporters. Crowdsource insight. Share the burden. You don’t have to hold it all.

Ask an Expert: If someone has a skill, resource, or insight you need — Ask.  Even pay for what you need. One client told me:

“But that’s our rainy day fund…”

“…Oh. I guess it’s raining.”

So — reach out. This week. Today, even.
Because one of the hardest things about leadership is the loneliness.
